Marlene Yuenโs work explores place through history, memory, and community. Drawing from archival research and storytelling, she examines how places become sites of cultural exchange and collective belonging. Her serigraph,ย Short Gumbootsย (2026) originates from her installation, Peace Together (2024), which pays homage to the historic Hong Wo General Store in Steveston Village, founded in 1895 by Ling Lam.ย ย
Yuenโs image of a simple pair of gumboots represents the many items that were purchased from Hong Wo, reflecting a time where diverse communities lived and worked alongside one another in Stevestonโs fishing industry. The boots are a quiet symbol ofย labour, movement, and connection, reflecting the generations of Indigenous, Chinese, Japanese, and Western settlers who contributed to the identity of the place. Through Yuenโs hands, place emerges as a shared history, built through everyday experiences and sustained through acts of remembrance, harmony, and peace.ย
