Arnold Shives, 𝘚𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘚𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘙𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 2003

Arnold Shives was born in 1943 in Vancouver. He developed his love of art during his high-school years at Lord Byng Oecondary and later at the University of British Columbia, where he audited painting classes with the ever-inspiring Gordon Smith. In 1968, returning to Vancouver from Stanford University, he met Toni Onley, who became a lifelong mentor. Onley encouraged Shives to pursue his imagery with professional galleries, and he met early success in both Vancouver and Toronto. Since that time Shives has worked as a full-time artist exploring the serene nature of the landscape in painting, assemblage and through printmaking. His work has been exhibited across Canada and in the United States, South Africa, Europe and Japan. It can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa. 

Over ten years, from 1993 to 2003, Canadian artist Arnold Shives developed an extraordinary journal of twelve original prints and reflective written entries of his experiences into the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. This portfolio, Mountain Journal, is a collection of masterful handmade prints which contain examples of etching, silkscreen, lithography and woodcut all chine colle mounted on handmade paper. The unique landscape imagery of these intimate prints reflect the personal journeys that Shives encountered and of the land we share. 

Arnold Shives generously donated the proceeds from the sales of Mountain Journal to the children and youth of North Vancouver through Artists for Kids.  Mountain Journal has been sold out for quite some time, however a limited number of individual artist's proofs (15), also gifted, remain. The 2026 Fall Portfolio highlights two works from this collection: Mount Orpheus and Seven Sisters Range.
