Gordon Appelbe Smith

1919 to 2020

Gordon Appelbe Smith, CM, OBC, LLD (1919 to 2020) is a cornerstone in the history of Modernist painting in Canada. One of Canada’s most important painters, Smith lived and worked in Vancouver, producing abstracted landscapes until his passing in 2020. His work was an evolving search for balance between abstraction and his love of the land, which has given us insight into both the act of painting and the essence of the West Coast. He has been honoured with the Order of Canada, the Order of British Columbia and the Governor General’s Award for Visual Art. His works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
